Cultivate’s training and coaching have strengthened my effectiveness across my various roles: Founder and Managing Consultant of Paul Chisunka & Associates, providing capacity building to NGOs, development partners, and public and private sector organizations; Board Chair of Amos Youth Centre, working to empower vulnerable children, women, and youth through community empowerment programming; Country Director/Consultant for African Education Program, working to strengthen grassroots communities and local leaders in Africa; and Project Manager for Elsa Miller Foundation-funded projects in Kafue and Chilanga Districts of Zambia, working to increase access to primary and secondary education in under-resourced public schools through the provision of quality infrastructure and other resources.

The Leadership Development and Personal Growth training helped me better understand my leadership style, strengths, and responsibilities. It increased my confidence and self-awareness while reinforcing the importance of accountability, rest, and balance. I have become more intentional about delegating responsibilities, developing others, and making decisions that support both organizational goals and my personal well-being.

The Asset-Based Community-Led Development and Community Empowerment training changed how I approach communities. Instead of focusing only on needs and problems, I now identify existing assets, abilities, relationships, and local opportunities. Community assessments, appreciative inquiry, and community mapping have helped me listen more carefully and involve community members in developing solutions. This has strengthened local ownership and made our programs more responsive and sustainable.

The Program Design training gave me practical tools for turning ideas into well-structured programs. Problem-and-solution analysis, SWOT analysis, business planning, budgeting, operational planning, and the development of clear mission statements, objectives, and program descriptions have improved how I plan and manage projects. Across the organizations I support, I can now communicate more clearly what a program intends to accomplish, whom it will serve, how it will operate, and what resources it will require.

Cultural Adaptability training helped me understand the perspectives and expectations of American and other Western donors. Learning about American culture and philanthropic practices has enabled me to present our work in ways that international supporters can understand while remaining authentic to our local context. I am now more aware of the importance of timely communication, transparency, accountability, and relationship-building in cross-cultural partnerships.

The Fundraising training directly addressed challenges I faced in identifying donors, making funding requests, and maintaining relationships with supporters. I gained a broader understanding of fundraising with individuals, businesses, faith groups, civic organizations, and foundations, as well as crowdfunding, events, and grant writing. I have become more strategic about researching prospects, preparing a compelling case for support, developing income plans, and practicing donor stewardship. Fundraising is no longer simply about asking for money; I now see it as building long-term partnerships around shared goals.

The Financial Management and Bookkeeping training strengthened my ability to prepare budgets, monitor cash flow, maintain records, and report on how funds are used. It also deepened my understanding of designated funds, financial controls, ethical practices, security, and donor expectations. This has helped me promote greater accountability and transparency within the organizations I support and has improved my confidence when discussing financial matters with boards, partners, and donors.

The Measurement and Evaluation training helped me move beyond reporting only activities and participant numbers. I can now distinguish between outputs, outcomes, and long-term impact and identify meaningful indicators of change. Tools such as theories of change, logic models, logical frameworks, and the Most Significant Change method have improved program design, learning, and reporting. By combining quantitative data with stories and other qualitative evidence, I am better able to demonstrate results, identify areas for improvement, and present a stronger case to funders.

The Communications and Online Program Marketing training improved how I tell the story of our work. I have learned to focus communication on people, results, and impact rather than merely listing activities. Newsletters, annual reports, websites, social media, communication calendars, and simple donor-management systems have helped me communicate more consistently, cultivate supporters, and strengthen donor stewardship.

Finally, the Computer Basics and Time Management training increased my confidence in using Word, Excel, Google Docs, spreadsheets, cloud storage, and free tools for design, communication, and project management. These skills have helped me organize information, collaborate more effectively, protect important data, and manage competing responsibilities across several organizations.

Overall, Cultivate’s curriculum and coaching have made me a more confident, reflective, organized, and accountable leader. I now approach fundraising, financial management, communication, and evaluation as connected parts of effective organizational leadership. The training has equipped me not only to perform my own roles more effectively but also to guide boards, staff members, volunteers, and community leaders in strengthening their organizations.

I would confidently recommend Cultivate’s program to other grassroots and community leaders. Its combination of leadership development, practical management tools, cross-cultural understanding, and personalized coaching is especially valuable for leaders who have strong visions for their communities but need the structures, skills, and confidence to translate those visions into sustainable impact.
