Why We Exist

🌱 Communities Already Have the Strengths to Lead

Communities possess the knowledge, relationships, and leadership needed to create lasting change.

🤝 Lasting Change Is Built With Communities

Effective local community development programs honor local knowledge, culture, and priorities.

🎓 Invest in People, Not Just Projects

Strengthening local leaders creates lasting impact that extends far beyond a single program.

🌍 Bridge Local Wisdom with Global Systems

We help leaders navigate fundraising, nonprofit leadership, and international partnerships without compromising their community’s values.

Lasting social change begins with local leadership.

Around the world, communities are working every day to address poverty, injustice, and inequality. The people closest to these challenges are also closest to the solutions. They understand their communities’ history, culture, strengths, and aspirations in ways that no outside organization ever can.

Yet for generations, many approaches to international development have placed decision-making, funding, and expertise outside the communities they seek to serve. While often well-intentioned, these approaches can unintentionally reinforce dependency, overlook local knowledge, and limit opportunities for communities to lead their own development.

We believe there is a better way.

Communities Already Have the Capacity to Lead

Every community possesses knowledge, relationships, resources, and leaders capable of creating meaningful change.

Lasting social change cannot be designed for communities — it must be built with them. Effective local community development programs honor local knowledge, culture, and priorities, ensuring that outside partners strengthen local leadership rather than replace it.

When communities lead, solutions are more relevant, more sustainable, and more likely to create lasting impact.

Investing in People Creates Lasting Change

At Cultivate, we believe the most effective way to strengthen communities is by strengthening the people already leading them.

Rather than leading projects on behalf of communities, we invest in local leaders through practical training, coaching, and support. As leaders grow in knowledge, confidence, and organizational capacity, they are better equipped to mobilize local resources, strengthen their organizations, and lead lasting change that reflects the priorities of their communities.

Bridging Local Wisdom and Global Systems

Local leaders know their communities better than anyone else. They understand the culture, history, relationships, and realities that shape lasting change.

Yet many of the systems that determine who receives funding, builds partnerships, and influences international development have been shaped by the expectations of the global nonprofit and philanthropy sectors. These expectations often reflect practices that are unfamiliar or difficult to access for grassroots organizations.

As a result, many capable leaders are overlooked — not because they lack vision or commitment, but because they have not had the opportunity to learn the language, systems, and practices that many funders and partners expect.

We believe local leaders should never have to compromise their values, culture, or community priorities to earn trust. Instead, they should have the opportunity to understand these systems, engage with them confidently, and decide how best to apply them within their own context.

That is why our training combines practical nonprofit leadership skills with the principles of community-led development. We help local leaders understand the expectations of the global nonprofit and philanthropy sectors while strengthening their ability to lead organizations that remain rooted in their own communities. Through training in fundraising, organizational leadership, financial sustainability, project management, and community development, leaders gain the tools to build trusted organizations without compromising their local knowledge, culture, or priorities.

Our Vision for the Future

We envision a world where every community has trusted local leaders with the knowledge, skills, and support to create lasting social change.

A world where communities define their own priorities, organizations work as equitable partners, and philanthropy strengthens local leadership rather than directing it.
