Cultivate continues to grieve with our Minnesota c Cultivate continues to grieve with our Minnesota community over the unjust deaths of men and women of the BIPOC community.

We stand alongside our brothers and sisters who are fighting for justice. We stand with those who demand justice for the countless lives of black, indigenous and people of color taken by broken people and systems of racism and injustice.

We denounce acts of injustice, bigotry, racism and hatred by our local and national governments. We plead for those who are hurting, scared and continue to experience racial trauma. We believe a better world is possible. We believe people are good and capable of amazing, beautiful things.

Take time to grieve and lament over the loss of life.

Grieving today the loss of another black man. #Dau Grieving today the loss of another black man. #DaunteWright, at the hands of the police's abuse of power. It reminds us of #paulofreire's teachings on fighting against #oppression. Here is a summary of what we have shared in our #communitydevelopment course on activism.

"True liberation, true social change, will always be political. If you feel in yourself a hesitancy to doing this kind of work, take the time to explore why. Why are you OK with giving the poor a handout, providing them services that alleviate their suffering, but are unwilling to step into the political realm of fighting injustice? What are you afraid that you will lose? Your reputation? Your good standing in society? These are big questions that cannot be easily answered. But please, take the time to really think through this. Generosity is good, it does save lives, but it does not permanently change systems and societies. If you're really in this work in order to make things better for your community, it is going to be political. Even if you don't label it like that. Fighting oppression and injustice is always political. Are you willing to step into it fully?"

These images also highlight Freire's explanation of the process of conscientization. I know that the hurting and oppressed of the Twin Cities have done this extremely hard work of investigation, dialogue, collaboration and action. For those of us not on the front lines, what will we do now?

Recently, when a woman named Aminata was hit by a taxi driver and left unconscious on the road, a community member who once received assistance from Fight Against Aids Guinea, called Johnson. He was able to send some of his staff to help Aminata contact her family members and help her receive the care she needed.
