The Problem
Community leaders from the Global South often struggle to lead local change due to complex poverty systems, deeply-embedded dependency, and learned helplessness, the dominance of large, multi-national organizations from the Global North, and their lack of understanding and capacity to lead successful organizations based on the norms created by the global civil sector. This situation perpetuates a cycle where communities are excluded from determining their own development paths. As a result, local leaders are often marginalized and unable to influence the decisions that directly impact their communities, hindering sustainable and meaningful development.
The Root Causes
The barriers to community-led efforts are multifaceted. Leaders of aspiring community-led organizations face a lack of support and capacity to implement effective programs. The international charitable sector’s expectations and practices, shaped by the Global North, create hurdles that local leaders must navigate to gain recognition and funding. The lack of initial funds forces communities to seek support from the Global North, where their local practices and cultural knowledge often clash with established donor norms. This disconnect hinders community-led efforts from securing necessary resources and perpetuates cycles of dependency and inequality.
